State of Syn Premiering on Hulu

Jewel State (Firefly) and David Hewlett (Stargate SG-1) star in an innovative new sci-fi series, State of Syn, that will premier on Hulu on the 18th January.

State of Syn combines sci-fi storytelling with an animation style that is somewhere between a traditional animation and a graphic novel. With 10 five-minute episodes State of Syn takes place in a futuristic society where the gap between the haves and have-nots has only grown larger.

The storyline follows Annika Drake (Staite) and her friends who, following the unexplained death of her father, are pulled into a twisted mystery surrounding his former company, emerging tech giant Psylosense. Now run by her father’s former business partner Aslin Kane (Hewlett), Psylosense is manufacturing a highly addictive new sensory experience called Vibe – a digital technology simulating a neurological condition called synesthesia – which is poised to become the new opiate of the masses.

The first three episodes are up on YouTube and while I’m not in love with the style I am hooked by the story.  It lends itself well to 5 minute chunks leaving you wanting more. However I feel the story might have been better as a traditional web series.

There is also a game on Android and iOS to drag you into the world further.  State of Syn: The World Outside is a puzzle game based around an escaped test subject which adds another level to the story

Even though the first three episodes are on YouTube it seems that the rest of the series will only be on Hulu, so  the UK will have to wait for a bit.

However I will be providing a full review of the first eight episodes soon to keep you going.

In the meantime, check out the first three episodes on the State of Syn YouTube channel.
