Futurama Season 6 Episode 18 – The Silence of the Clamps

This episode of Futurama sees the welcome return of the Robot Mafia. After Bender sees the attempted murder of Calculon by the Don Bot, he must testifies against them and joins the witness relocation programme to protect himself. Clamps then fills the void at Planet Express to try and find Bender… Much to Zoidberg’s chagrin.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that this is the first time we have actually seen the Space Pope in the er… flesh, in Futurama, and he is a welcome addition to the Futurama family. Bender is on fine form as he flirts with every robot at the Don Bot’s wedding, and Futurama is always great when Bender is the centre of an episode.

The episode is reminiscent of the episode in season 2; Bender Gets Made. Not only is Bender mixed up with the mob, but Fry loses his best friend and spends the episode searching for him, similar to the episode Godfellas. Zoidberg’s jealousy of clamps’ ability to clip is hilarious as is the rivalry between the two.

This has to be the best episode of Futurama we have seen so far in this season. The season has been getting better since it began, but this is the first episode that has hit the tone and stride of the episodes of Futurama that we know and love. There are also some classic lines including Fry’s “Earth is dangerous, I fell off my chair once” and Hedonism Bot’s description of the jury’s deliberation process.

Overall, Futurama has found it’s feet again after a weak start to the season and has built slowly into some good episodes after the hiatus. Maybe it was the writers trying to get used to the characters again or searching for storylines that would suit the series, but whatever the issue was, it seems to have been resolved now. Hurrah!
