The Walking Dead Season 1 Episode 2 – Guts

At the end of the first episode of The Walking Dead, our hero Rick was trapped in a tank surrounded by Walkers. Rick finally makes a break for freedom and meets other survivors of the Walker apocalypse. The gang hide out in an abandoned department store, but know that they have to search for a way out.

While the first episode of The Walking Dead was about Rick and his solitude, this episode introduces the idea of other survivors. Of course the issue of the episode is the power struggle and how people relate to each other in times of a crisis. This episode looks as good as the one that went before, and the ideas that the gang come up with in order to survive, are slightly more on the unusual side for a ‘zombie’ show.

The second episode of The Walking Dead is a step down from the pilot episode, but that is to be expected. This does not mean that this is not a fantastic episode, however. Of course, now that other characters have been introduced into the show, we are not given the in depth character study of Rick that we were treated to in the first episode, but it does not appear that this new camaraderie is going to last very long, especially since the gang in Atlanta are part of the group outside the city that Rick’s (unfaithful) wife, Lori, is with.

As well as this, this episode of The Walking Dead was much more action packed than the episode that went before. Character studies are all well and good, but sometimes you just want to see some zombies… Sorry, Walkers… getting killed. Still no inkling as to what happened to most of the population of the earth to send them off the rails, but there is time enough for that yet.

A good follow up episode for The Walking Dead, filled with action and insights into human nature when faced with your own mortality. It will be very interesting to see what happens throughout the rest of the season.
