TV REVIEW: Castle – Season 5, Episode 11 ‘Under the Influence’

It’s murder on the dancefloor! With the death of a DJ, Castle and Beckett have to delve into the murky depths of the New York music scene.

After the hints from Castles ex-wife last week regarding how little Beckett really knows him, I expected there to be some character development in this episode. And there was but not from Castle or Beckett.

In this episode, Esposito shows his softer side by  taking a street kid under his wing in an attempt to gain his trust and help lead to the murderer. The pairing of Esposito and ‘the kid’ makes for some nice scenes. Having obviously been off the rails himself as a teen, Espo makes time for the young boy who needs a guiding hand to make sure he doesn’t make the same mistakes.

It was a pleasant enough episode but didn’t really drive any of the story forward. Casketts relationship, the shadowy senator and it’s still bugging me about Castle’s Dad. There have literally been a handful of hints as to who he was, surely it must be coming out soon?

A note on Becketts wardrobe…. I’m not usually the kind of gal who criticizes other womens clothing (you can’t criticise when you live in jeans and t-shirts) but Becketts wardrobe this season has really confused me. It’s not of a woman in love, if anything it’s of a woman repressed. Maybe I’m reading too much into it but the high buttoned collars and neutral colours are not what I would normally associate with a woman in the throes of a passionate new affair. I’m glad that we have a strong, female kick-ass heroine on our screens that isn’t wearing skin tight leather but it feels like the wardrobe department have went too far in the other direction?
