April Fools!

It is a long running tradition in the game and technology world for developers to play April Fools pranks on their fans, and this year is no exception! We’ve had some great jokes played today, so I thought it would be cool to share my favorites with everyone now that it has gone noon and there is no danger of any more angry fanboys. (Seriously, you should read some of the comments over at IGN)

Today Google announced that they were moving into the Motion Control market with Gmail Motion. You can now control your Gmail account through simple movements, which are captured by a Webcam. Well, obviously you can’t you fool. But I must say that the site that Google set up to accompany this notion is extremely convincing that for a second they had me. Check out www.gmail.com/motion for more info.

Point that there and stick that in the air, while putting that there...

Splash Damage, developers of Brink, pulled out all the stops this morning announced their first ever social game! With the Facebook demographic in mind ‘Tapir Wars 3 and 1/3: The Zoocial Notwork’ takes all those annoying Facebook games and multiplies that by 10. Although it did make me chuckle this morning, the sad fact is of course that games like this do exist. Nonetheless, a ‘gameplay’ demo, completely taking the piss out of other social games, was put on the site www.splashdamage.com/myface as well as the ability to ‘like’ every single aspect of the site. Funny Stuff.

Youtube have implemented a 1911 mode to some videos on the site so you can watch them in silent movie style, with a great ‘Top 5 viral videos of 1911’ video to boot. This isn’t as foolish as the other pranks but an April Fool nonetheless.

Blizzard’s annual contribution was a GPS voice pack featuring Deckard Cain from Diablo 3. I’ve never played this game, but still find the phrases funny, you can find them here: http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/community/merchandise/gps/index.xml.

IGN’s annual trailer is a Harry Potter TV show epic trailer! As always the quality of it is fantastic and is so believable, if I wasn’t told it was an April Fools prank then I would probably have believed it! You can watch the trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WhhS2maFEs&feature=chan%20nel_video_title.

There are plenty more out there, but these 5 jumped out at me. Please comment below, send me/us a tweet @Geeksyndicate or @Tom_1994 respectively, or visit our brand spanking new Facebook Page – www.facebook.com/geeksyndicate and share your favorites!
