Futurama Season 6 Episode 10 – A Prisoner of Benda

Professor Farnsworth comes up with a machine that allows the crew of Planet Express to swap bodies (and, it would seem, vocal chords). After the initial swap between Amy and the Professor goes brilliantly right then brilliantly wrong, the rest of the crew get involved… with some confusing results.

Futurama seems to be making a pattern now; several fine episodes then one every few weeks that knocks it out of the park. This is one of the funniest episodes of the new season, simply because it gets confusing and ridiculous. In tone, the episode is reminiscent of The Farnsworth Parabox – an episode in season 4 of the show – and is just as funny.

At first, it is a little jarring that the characters keep their own voices after the mind swaps, but once Bender’s plot to steal from Royalty gets involved in the story, it makes sense, otherwise there would be no telling who was who. The best swap is Fry – Zoidberg and Leela – Farnsworth. Both are trying to prove that the other is only attracted to their looks but they end up making out on the table in Elzar’s. This resolution is both gross and funny, and just shows the kind of humour that Futurama is good at. Another cute switch is that of Scruffy (the janitor) and Amy. Once washbucket has a human body she tries to seduce Scruffy – who she has always been in love with. Sweet, funny and just a little awkward.

As well as this, Farnswoth – Bender becomes a circus daredevil, Bender – Prince becomes, well… A prince and Hermes – Amy becomes just a little slimmer. Seems like everyone was onto a winner until, as usual, Bender got greedy.

Overall, the episode felt like an old fashioned farce, but instead of characters ending up humiliated, they wound up back in their own bodies, having learned something about how the other half lives. This is one of the best episodes of the season so far, and uses all of the characters to their best advantage. Long may it continue.
