Futurama Season 6 Episode 13 – The Futurama Holiday Spectacular

Futurama is back after it’s hiatus and brings us it’s Holiday Spectacular. It may seem like it’s a little early for a Christmas episode of anything, but Futurama also focuses on the made up robot holiday Robanakah and the um, less made up Kwanzaa.

This episode of Futurama is in the style of the old Anthology of Interest episodes, but until the fairly shocking end of the first segment – in which the gang bring back the extinct pine tree, much to the delight of Al Gore – there is no indication that this is going to be an anthology episode. The first segment is kind of interesting, and as all good Futurama episodes do, makes a couple of snide digs about environmental issues, but the song that Fry demands is awkward and clunky and it seems there could have been a lot more done with the Santa Claus bot.

The second segment of the show is given over to the robot holiday Robanakah. Again, there is a clunky and awkward song explaining the premise of the holiday as Bender sees it. The gang have to drill to the centre of the earth to harvest petroleum oil for the ceremonial Robanakah oil wrestle, but of course, things go wrong along the way. This segment is not much better than the one that went before it. Again there is the dig at environmental issues with the drilling for oil, but the jokes are few and far between and the end of the segment comes far too suddenly.

Finally, there is a segment about Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa Bot turns up at Hermes’ house for another uninteresting song about the traditions of the holiday, and the gang set off on a mission to gather beeswax from the space bees to make candles. Again, this segment was disappointing, why the space bees were given stereotypical African American and New York accents is unclear, as is the reason that they suddenly speak in a language that the gang can understand.

Overall, the episode is enjoyable, but it is not one of the stronger episodes of Futurama. Disappointing, seeing as the show was on hiatus for such a long time that a better episode should have been used to bring it back.
