Thought Bubble Festival 2008

The Thought Bubble Festival in Leeds is returning for its second year this November! The convention will be held on Saturday, November 15th! Here are the details:

Thought Bubble preparation is underway! The festival will take place this year during November, and as last year the festival is brought to you in conjunction with the 22nd Leeds International Film Festival. The convention event will be held on Saturday, November 15th, at the Royal Armouries’ Saviles Hall, with satellite events such as workshops and film screenings taking place on other days; check the programme on the website for further information. The website is being updated regularly, so check back often for details on screenings, guests, panels and workshops.

The Thought Bubble festival will take place at a variety of locations around the city centre this year, including panels and workshops in Leeds Art Gallery and Leeds City Library. We’re also very excited to announce that the Thought Bubble one day convention event will be held this year at the Royal Armouries in the Saviles Hall. If at any time you wrote to Jim and he did not Fix It, he’s making up for it now with this fabulous venue wink.gif Seriously, it’s an amazing venue, less than 10 minutes walk from the train station and city centre.


The fantastic and hugely popular creator of Wanted (now a hotly anticipated motion picture scheduled for release in June 2008) and Kick-Ass, writer of the Fantastic Four, the Ultimates, and more great books than you can shake a stick at, is now confirmed as a guest for the 2008 installment of Thought Bubble. We’re pleased as punch!

Alex Maleev
I’m sure you’re already familiar with Alex’s work, but if not I highly recommend you check out his beautiful and atmospheric art on titles such as Daredevil and Halo: The Uprising, plus his covers for Nova are really spectacular! He’ll be with us for the weekend of the convention.

C.B. Cebulski
The brilliant and diverse writer of The Loners, Marvel Fairy Tales, Drain, Wonderlost, X-Men: Divided We Stand and many more will be at Thought Bubble 2008! He might like beer, you should buy him one.

Mike Carey
Acclaimed writer of X-Men, X-Men: Legacy, Lucifer, Hellblazer, Crossing Midnight and many more comic book titles, plus his brilliant Felix Castor novels. Mike will be doing a writing workshop for us, stay tuned for more details.

Adi Granov
Iron Man artist extraordinaire in his only UK convention appearance of 2008!

Barry Kitson
Fan favourite Barry, the new Amazing Spider-Man artist, is back with us for round 2 of Thought Bubble!

Providing us with stunning art on Green Arrow: Year One, Faker, Hellblazer, The Losers and many more, the fantastic Jock will be joining us for the festival this year.

Andy Diggle
The fantastic writer of Green Arrow: Year One, The Losers, Hellblazer and Silent Dragon (one of my personal favourites!) has just confirmed as a guest at the festival!

Sean Phillips
The brilliant artist who brought us Marvel Zombies, Criminal, Batman: Jekyll & Hyde and more is returning to Thought Bubble 2008!

Rutu Modan
Rutu Modan#s stunning graphic novel “Exit Wounds” was voted one of the Top 10 graphic novels of 2007 by Time magazine and is a highly recommend read. Rutu will be appearing at the show for panels and signing.

Emma Vieceli
A member of Sweatdrop Studios, a UK based group who create manga-style comics, the very talented Emma will be a guest at Thought Bubble this year! Check out her work on her creator owned title, Dragon Heir, and the Manga Shakespeare edition of Hamlet.

David Lafuente
One of Marvel’s hottest new talents will be making an appearance at Thought Bubble this year! Check out his beautiful work on Patsy Walker: Hellcat and X-Men: Divided We Stand.

Plus the following great creators will be in attendance:

Peter Doherty
The colourist crazy enough to take on Shaolin Cowboy and do a blinding job, Peter is also responsible for illustrating some of Judge Dredd’s most pivotal storylines. Peter will be at the show for signing and sketching!

Dr. Mel Gibson
The very lovely Dr. Mel Gibson will be in attendance running panels and workshops; she is a comics scholar and consultant and has written a number of fascinating articles about comics.

Leigh Gallagher
Leigh gallagher, artist on Defoe for 2000AD and LEGO: Bionicle will be at Thought Bubble. Check out his beautiful and moody pages on his blog.

Kieron Gillen
Originally starting out as a video games journalist, we’re very lucky that he turned his talents to the comic book industry! Kieron brought us the amazing Phonogram with partner in crime Jamie McKelvie, and at present hes working on newuniversal: 1959.

Frazer Irving
Frazer has worked on titles as diverse as Klarion the Witchboy, Iron Man: The Inevitable and Gutsville. His art is rich and brilliantly unique–we love it!!

Staz Johnson
With a wealth of comic book credits to his name, penciller Staz Johnson has worked on titles including Heroes, Civil War: War Crimes and Dracula. Check out his website for more examples of his amazing work.

Antony Johnston
Writer of the very popular post-apocalyptic series Wasteland, Antony is currently working on an original English language version of a Wolverine manga for Del Ray Manga, plus a prequel comic book to the videogame Dead Space with Ben Templesmith. A great talent and a great guy, meet him at Thought Bubble smile.gif

Tony Lee
Tony Lee will be appearing at Thought Bubble! Writing credits include X-Men Unlimited #1, Starship Troopers, The Gloom, and the widely acclaimed Hope Falls! He’s currently working on Doctor Who: The forgotten with Y The Last Man artist Pia Guerra!

Simone Lia
Simone Lia is the creator of the lovely and poignant Fluffy books, they come highly recommend by the Thought Bubble helpers and can be purchased through her website and at all good comic book shops. Will someone please stand in line for me on the day and get me a Fluffy sketch? Thank you smile.gif

Jamie McKelvie
Jamie McKelvies’ edgy and disctinctive style has graced the pages of Phonogram and his Suburban Glamour project, plus his work was featured in X-Men: Divided We Stand. watch this space, Jamie’s talent will take him far!

and my personal hero, Liam Sharp!
The man who brought us Death’sHead II, Liam has recently pencilled Testament and Lord Havok and the Exterminators, and his art book Lap of the Gods is now available. Liam and his wife Christina are responsible for Mamtor, publishing that focuses on bringing alternative independent comics to a wider audience through intelligent advertising campaigns and the sheer brilliance and diversity of the work within. I can’t say enough good things about Liam smile.gif We are very lucky to have him!

The first 500 people to buy their tickets online not only receive an invite to our after party at the exclusive Thought Bubble bars in the stunning new Alea Casino development, but will also be entered into a prize draw to win great prizes. More details to follow! Remember, if you are one of the first 500 to buy a ticket and you want to attend the afterparty, you must be over 18 and provide a valid ID upon request when entering Alea.

Like last year, under 12’s get in to the convention absolutely free with a full paying adult. All workshops and panels are included in the price of your convention ticket. Although free, all workshops will require that you sign up in advance as spaces are limited. Film screenings are not covered by the cost of the ticket, sorry! Those are individually priced at the cinemas showing them.

We’re looking for exhibitors for this year’s show. We have very competitive table rates, and welcome enquiries from small press, dealers and professionals alike. Drop us a line at [email protected] if you’re interested. Prices for a table for small press and professionals are £35 for the day, and are £55 for dealers, retailers and publishers.
