Prince of Persia: Before the Sandstorm and Solomon’s Thieves

Written by Jordan Mechner, the creator of Prince of Persia, this gorgeously illustrated graphic anthology will appeal to fans of the video game franchise, fans of the movie, and fans of comics and graphic novels! Dive further into the world of the upcoming Walt Disney Film, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time with this book of six original stories, all highlighting the characters and the world of the film, with art by some of the best and brightest talents in comics!

Comics that are related to films, whether it’s a prequel or whatever don’t generally do a lot for me. I don’t really know why but I’ve never really been able to get into them. I took a look at some of the preview pages for the prequel graphic novel Prince of Persia: Before the Sandstorm and loved the art which was no surprise as one of the artists involved is Tommy Lee Edwards recently of Turf fame. It also features the art of five other artists;  Bernard Chang, Tom Fowler, Niko Henrichon, David Lopez, and Cameron Stewart.

Prince of Persia: Before the Sandstorm has been written by author, screenwriter and video game designer Jordan Mechner, the man behind the Prince of Persia video game franchise. He is also the writer and executive producer on the new film.

I think the sample images looks great and time will tell whether it will suffer from  some of the  short comings of other film related comics but what I’ve seen so far  makes me want to find out which camp this title will fall into. I also think that having the actual creator of the game writing the comic will hopefully give the comic the  edge over other properties of this type.

The other title (and to be honest the one I’m much more interested in ) that Jordan has just finished is Solomon’s Thieves which looks fantastic. I’ve already said before anything with that swashbuckler vibe is always going to get me to sit up and take notice and this looks like no exception. Solomon’s Thieves straight away reminded me of the European comic “The Devil’s Mark” featuring the swashbuckling hero, The Scorpion which I reviewed some time ago and loved.

Solomon’s Thieves is the first book of a trilogy and just reading the description give on his blog has me already heading for the pre-order button.

Solomon’s Thieves is a swashbuckling adventure set in medieval France, based on the historical events of the fall of the Knights Templar. It’s the story of a group of outlawed knights who band together, Ocean’s Eleven-style, to pull off the greatest heist of the 14th century.

So nice looking art,  matched by an equally kick ass premise and it’s my birthday next month so I’m taking that as a sign to pre -order this bad boy methinks.

Also on a personal note  ever since seeing Raiders of the Lost Ark, aged eleven I dreamt of becoming a writer so listening to Jordan  talk about his similar dream of becoming a comic book author stuck a nerve with me.

As a kid growing up in New York, I dreamed of becoming a comic book author. But the arrival of my first Apple II computer channeled my passion for visual storytelling in different directions. For the next two decades, enthralled by the challenge of creating video games (and more recently, with Prince of Persia, writing screenplays), I stayed involved with the world of books and comics only as a reader and fan.

Childhood dreams never really go away; they just go into hiding for a while. So I’m very excited to announce the publication of my first book – Solomon’s Thieves, an original graphic novel. I’m intensely proud of it, and of the spectacular work artists LeUyen Pham and Alex Puvilland have done.

I know the first time I saw my book sitting on a shelf in Waterstones (next to copies of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skull) will be an image I’ll take to the grave.

Solomon Thieves is out in May and Prince of Persia: Before the Sandstorm is out now.
