Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner – The first augmented reality Star Wars game

Test footage from an early version of Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner, the first augmented reality Star Wars game. Coming out in mid-November for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 4th Gen. Developed by Vertigore Games and published by THQ Wireless.

If you’re a Star Wars fan and you have any of those devices (woo hoo…I have an iTouch) then surely this is a must buy?

Updated with some more info on the game from Gizmodo,.

Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner, developed by Vertigore Games and published by THQ Wireless, takes your surroundings and sticks them outside Han Solo’s crosshairs. Whether it’s the New York skyline or an IHOP parking lot, you’ll be able to blast TIE Fighters out of the sky as if they were invading right now, in a galaxy really, really close. The game will also feature other iconic moments from the Star Wars universe—the escape from the Death Star, the Battle of Hoth—with the option of switching between rendered backgrounds and AR scenery from your device’s camera.

  1. This is sooo cool …but: will i be able to play this on ipod touch which does not have a camera to capture the background?

I’m not sure as I just realized I’m in the same boat as you. I’m going to download it anyway and give it a go. Worst case scenario my girlfriend as an iphone so I’ll just play it on her’s (If I ask nicely)

The new iTouches have a camera, the older ones don’t

Want this now, but alas it is not out yet, it does mention that it has other backgrounds so it should still work for those without a camera .

    Great find Barry.

Fingers crossed it’s works without the camera.

To be honest it was dave who found it and done it as an RT on twitter but something this cool needed to be mentioned on the site.

Sorry fellas. At launch, it’s only available for iPhone 4, 3GS and the most recent iPod Touch. When you see what we’re pushing in game (hint: massive Star Destroyer attack run), you’ll understand. We’ll look into porting it for older devices, but… It’s totally going to be worth it to upgrade. 😉

Gutted mate! It looks like I’ll have to see if I can convince my girlfriend to play it on her iphone. I definately think porting it to older devices would be worth while.

Thanks for taking the time to come on here with the info.

  3. I WANT!! they better get a Android version made and bloody quick!

How does it integrate with the “reality” then? Does the camera information just become a background wallpaper? Even if you happen to work high up in an office block like the person in this video, it’s not like you’re wooshing between those buildings as you chase those ships. Seems like a gimmick that won’t last, really.
