Vales Steam Machines & SteamOS now available

Valve have made their SteamOS available for download and have shipped thier beta Steam Machine’s and Steam controller out to 300 registered testers. Based on Linux, Steam OS is free to download and free to license for game developers and manufacturers.

Although designed for PC gaming, SteamOS and Steam Machines are aiming to bring PC games to the living room and to replicate the console experience.

Vales have said that “In SteamOS, we have achieved significant performance increases in graphics processing, and we’re now targeting audio performance and reductions in input latency at the operating system level. Game developers are already taking advantage of these gains as they target SteamOS for their new releases.”

Steam OS features include full parental control, the ability to stream Steam games from a Windows machine, and for the first time, the ability to play all the games in a household, no matter whose account they belong to, but with individual user profiles to earn achievements.
