INTERVIEW: Bags of Action Talks to the Stars of Black Rose

Action movie BLACK ROSE starring Alexander Nevsky, Kristanna Loken (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines), Adrian Paul (Highlander: Endgame), Robert Davi (Expendables 3) and Matthias Hues (Dark Angel) hits cinemas in the US on April 28th.  A Russian Police Major (Alexander Nevsky) is enlisted by the LAPD to help solve a series of gruesome murders perpetrated against young women by a sadistic sociopathic killer on the mean streets of Hollywood.Alexander Nevsky is a former Mr. Universe and an established movie star in Russia. He is based in Los Angeles and his credits include “Moscow Heat,” “Undisputed,” “Treasure Raiders,” “Somewhere” and the upcoming “Maximum Impact.”

Bags of Action co-host Pete Rogers was lucky enough to get to ask some of the stars of the film a few questions recently. First up are Alexander Nevsky and Matthias Hues.

Geek Syndicate (GS):Alexander you acted as producer, director and star in Black Rose, what was the biggest challenge you had to juggle all these roles?

Alexander Nevsky (AN): Black Rose is my directorial debut and as a director and producer I was really involved in almost every aspect of pre-production, production and post-production. As an actor I was in almost every scene (except prologue) so of course it was very tough. But I was smart enough to surround myself with real professionals like Sheldon Lettich (director of action classic Double Impact, he served as executive producer and consultant), director of photography Rudy Harbon, editor Stephen Adrianson and score composer Sean Murray. My co-stars Kristanna Loken, Adrian Paul, Robert Madrid, Matthias Hues and Robert Davi were very supportive also. So I think the biggest problem was not having enough time for sleep, meals and gym for several months in a row. But it was all worth it and please don’t get me wrong: I enjoyed every moment of it because I always wanted to make movies!

GS: What was it about the script that made you want to make your directional debut with it?

AN: I created original story for Black Rose and script was written later by Brent Huff (he directed my action film Treasure Raiders) and George Saunders (he wrote Hard Corps for JCVD). So I wanted to direct it myself right from the beginning. I mixed several genres in Black Rose so there are some action, mystery, “fish out of water” funny moments and even some horror elements. I’m a big fan of classic Hollywood action movies and thrillers of 80s and 90s and paid tribute to many of my favorites (Cobra, Red Heat, Dirty Harry). And it was interesting to play my character – Russian Police Major Vlad Kazatov. He has to join LAPD for several weeks and help them to find a merciless “Black Rose Killer” but it’s Kazatov’s first trip to the US and he doesn’t understand a lot of things here. So sometimes he looks like Crocodile Dundee, not like Terminator 😉

GS: You’ve worked with some legendary names in action movie history like Don The Dragon Wilson, Mark Dascascos, the late David Carradine and Wesley Snipes – is there anyone who haven’t worked with that you’d really like to.?

AN: Of course. I didn’t work together yet with Arnold, Sly Stallone, JCVD, Nic Cage and Bruce Willis. But in my film Showdown in Manila (which will be released in North America this fall) I had an opportunity to work with so many action legends: from Casper Van Dien and Tia Carrere to Cary Tagawa and Olivier Gruner. In my next action project Maximum Impact (directed by great Andrzej Bartkowiak, it’s on final stage of post-production) I’m working with Mark Dacascos, Kelly Hu, Danny Trejo, Tom Arnold and Eric Roberts among others.

And let me thank again my Black Rose stars Kristanna Loken, Robert Davi, Matthias Hues, Robert Madrid and Adrian Paul for all their support! Film is out in theaters this weekend and will be on all the platforms on May 2nd. Hope North American audience will like Black Rose!

GS:Matthias you’ve gone toe to toe with many of the most recognisable names in action film history. How does Alexander compare?

Matthias Hues (MH): Alexander is a powerhouse. It’s a new feeling to look someone eye to eye who is 40 pounds heavier then you. We do work out together and I must admit he is stronger then me. I always love our workouts, us using each other to push the limits and then talk movies. And then doing it together.

GS: You’ve worked with lots of people in multiple films, like Don Wilson, Billy Blanks and now Alexander. Is there anyone you acted with once who you’d love to be reunited on screen with?

MH: Well Alexander did a great job to bring us all back together in Showdown in Manila. Pretty much most of my friends were in in it. Maybe Alexander brings all of us together at one time, like Billy Blanks, Lorenzo Lamaz, Cynthia, Don, Oliver, Jeff Speakman, Bolo, Daniel Bernhardt, Dolph Lundgren and JCVD.

GS: Dark Angel is probably your most iconic role. What is your favourite memory from working on that movie?

MH: All of it was an amazing experience. I felt challenged every day, took chances and survived that crazy movie in one piece and sure am ready to do it all again.

Thank you for following all our careers and we are happy that you are watching.

GS: Thanks for your time guys!

We should have a follow up interview in the next week or so with their co-star Kristanna Loken.
