Countdown to Thought Bubble 2013 – Countdown News, Freaktown Comics and Screenings Galore

thoughtbubblelogo2013Here’s my third countdown to Thought Bubble and this time I hope to scare the pants off you or rather an new UK Horror imprint hopes to do that. They better not be doing a comic about clowns…

Thought Bubble has always been a great venue for small press and this year is no exception. Freaktown Comics are an all new UK Based Small press publishing imprint who will be making their debut at Thought Bubble.  The new imprint will be specialising in horror and adventure one-shots.  Due to the yellow streak running a mile wide down my back I don’t think I’ll be picking up the horror stuff but the adventure angle has me intrigued.

The team’s  first title is THE DARK OF THE FOREST

It all started out so innocently.

Seven friends set out on a birdwatching weekend in the middle of the Navarre forest. Little did they know that while they were watching the birds, something else was watching them. Something that wasn’t human. Something very protective of the forest, and willing to kill anyone that gets in its way.

Something hungry.

Freaktown Comics brings you a desperate tale of survival, humans united against a mysterious and deadly predator in a bloody battle to the death.

Written by Russell Hillman, with art by Sergio Calvet.

48pages full colour, £6.50

The other title launching at Thought Bubble is  ‘FAST AND FRIGHTENING ‘ and is centered around the world of Roller Derby. Giving that most of the volunteers at Thought Bubble seem to belong to a Roller Derby this seems like a great place to launch the title.

Blown away by their first bout, four young women decide to take on the world. With skates on their feet, helmets on their heads, pads on their knees and fire in their hearts they assemble a mighty roller derby league. Follow their exploits on and off the track as they skate fast, turn left and hit hard. It’s red-hot girl-on-girl sports action!

Freaktown Comics brings the excitement and action of roller derby to the comics page, and introduces you to the people who make it happen.

Written by Russell Hillman, with art by Carlos Pedro and Keith Chan.

104 pages, black and white, £12.00

As I previously said both books will be on sale at Thought Bubble comic convention but will also be available to order through from Wednesday 27th November.

You can follow Freaktown Comics on Twitter and check out their facebook page.

Screenings Galore

Now long time attendees will know that the Thought Bubble Festival is a lot more than a two day comic convention and that it really lives up to the ‘Festival’ part of the name. The convention is partnered with the 28th Leeds International Film Festival, the UK’s largest regional film festival which kicks off on Novemeber 6th. The Festival opened in style with a sell out showing of the film ‘Gravity’ starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, which I keep hearing nothing but good things about. If you want to know exactly what’s happening during the film festival have a read of their online guide.

In terms of Thought Bubble their are a huge line up of screenings (you can see the full list here) set up as part of their relationship to the Film Festival. I thought today would be a good day to highlight a few of the screenings that you lot might want to check out. So get your Calendars at the ready.

Monday 18th November 18:00 –  The Dark Knight Returns (Everyman Cinema, Albion Street, Leeds, 1800 (156 min), 15, please visit for tickets and prices ): If you’ve not seen this animated adaptation of Frank Miller’s classic tale of the ageing Bruce Wayne donning the cowl again then you are badly missing out. If you have already seen it then the fact that they are showing parts one and two as a single film should be incentive enough to check this out.

Monday 18th November 21:00 –  Masterpiece: Frank Millers’s The Dark Knight Returns:  Shows how out of touch I am. I didn’t even know there was a documentary on The Dark Knight Returns graphic novel. Also it’s narrated by who I could listen to that guy recite the phone book, love his voice.

Monday 18th 18:00 and Tuesday 19th November – World Animation Awards 18:30, 20:30 – Leeds Town Hall, Victoria Hall, 2030 (100 min), 12, please visit for tickets and prices – Pop along and check out the best animated films all under one roof.
