DC Dispatches: The Flash and Future DC Films (incl. JLA, WW etc)

Whether it’s Warner Bros, The CW or the DC stable themselves, here are the world-wide mutterings!

This week: strong rumours surround the expanding DC/Warner film universe, and more food for thought from The Flash!

The Flash: Check out this new Flash featurette and meet future Vibe, Killer Frost, Cisco Ramon and Caitlin Snow:

And by the way, if you have seen the extended trailer for the  upcoming Flash show, the interweb has gone mad dissecting the many Easter Eggs peppered throughout the footage. Here’s our round-up of the best ones:

1. Reverse-Flash – Geeks be swearing blind they see a sinister yellow blur of the Reverse-Flash and the reveal later in the trailer of police detective Eddie Thawne, leading them to freak out that two comic-book incarnations of the Reverse-Flash will appear – the second, Eobard Thawne, aka Professor Zoom, and the third, Hunter Zolomon, aka Zoom, a police profiler. Both of them are time travellers and seen here wearing a yellow version of the outfit Barry later wears, suggests he becomes Zoom later on the series.

2.Vibe and Killer Frost – Cisco Ramon and Caitlin Snow are introduced as the Diggle/Felicity-style backroom team for Barry Allen, but both could become heroes in their own right: in the comics, Ramon is the vibrating superhero Vibe, while Snow is the sub-zero super-villain Killer Frost.

3. Ferris Air – a biggie here, Barry and co turn up at a Ferris Air test field for speed trials… well, Ferris Air is the employer of test pilot turned space cop Hal Jordan and owned by Carol Ferris, last seen in the less-than-brilliant Green Lantern. In terms of linkage, we have already seen Amanda Waller in Arrow, also first seen in Green Lantern.

4. STAR Labs – Barry wakes up in STAR Labs, which of course is heavily associated with the Superman universe, appearing in Man Of Steel and is connected to the origin of future Justice League member Cyborg, due to appear in Batman Vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

5. World’s Finest – the trailer teases at a dark/light hero bromance between Oliver Queen and Barry Allen’s, which is an obvious parallel to the Big Boy Scout & The Dark Knight, though the scene actually feels stolen from Nightwing #102, where Dick Grayson, having broken with Batman and the name Robin, visits a hero he’s in awe of for advice – Superman. Superman gives him the name of Nightwing along with a pep talk, much like Oliver offering up ‘Flash’ as a name before leaving Barry in wide-eyed admiration.

Future DC Films: I haven’t the foggiest who Nikki Finke is, but they are being reported a lot as being in “the know”. But her sources have apparently given a scoop on what is coming up at this July’s  Comic-Con from the DC / Warner by way of film announcements – so far:

May 2016 – Batman v Superman
July 2016 – Shazam
Xmas 2016 – Sandman
May 2017 – Justice League
July 2017 – Wonder Woman
Xmas 2017 – Flash and Green Lantern team-up
May 2018 – Man Of Steel 2

There had been rumours of a Metal Men and Suicide Squad movies (as previously reported), but for now they are off the schedule.

They also posed the possible scenario: if you were wondering why Batman v Superman was delayed, it wasn’t the script or Ben Affleck’s injury, but with this pic acting as a launching pad for the Justice League, a lot of dominoes need to be in place first, According to Nikki’s source, “Like Marvel’s The Avengers, there will be cameos of superheroes for future installments. The cameos will include the already known Cyborg and Flash. Green Lantern (not played by Ryan Reynolds, apparently) may be introduced.  And Aquaman will be seen in the Justice League movie. (The) problem is, Warner Bros Pictures was still negotiating with the actors for those cameos and future roles, meaning major contracts for multiple JL/character films to follow. The studio didn’t want to move forward until they had more of this secure so they held off starting production for a few months. Seemingly simple reason, but the implications are pretty darn huge.”

If there is truth to this, and sites are giving it some gravitas, then DC/Warner may well have got their Marvelesque 15 year plan in place, which can only be something to look forward to…
