Marvel Mutterings: Daredevil, Ant-Man, X-Men and Dr Strange!

Whether it’s Fox, Sony or the Marvel stable themselves, here are the world-wide witterings!

This week: The Kingpin is cast, Ant-Man has a new director, a Brit to play Doc Strange(?)… and Channing Tatum for Gambit!?!

Daredevil: Oh joy – fantastic news! The very brilliant Vincent D’Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket, Men In Black, Law & Order: Criminal Intent) has been cast as criminal mastermind Wilson Fisk, AKA The Kingpin, in Netflix’s Daredevil TV series. He’ll join Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, and is a welcome addition to the roster, as well as a marked departure from The Kingpin as played by the late Michael Clarke Duncan in Mark Steven Johnson’s Daredevil in 2003. The Kingpin is one of the most powerful crime lords in the Marvel universe – created by Stan Lee and John Romita, Sr. back in ’67, he was originally pitted against Spider-Man before becoming Daredevil’s nemesis. The 13-episode season is set to air exclusively on Netflix in 2015, and will be followed by four other original Marvel series. Marvel’s announcement was accompanied by this mug shot-style photo:

Ant-Man: the departure of Edgar Wright took the fan-world by surprise, but now Marvel have announced Peyton Reed as their replacement for director of Ant-Man, while it’s rumoured that Adam McKay will help with the script. The script was rumoured to be the major reason for Wright and Joe Cornish’s departure, and whilst its current status is unknown, it will be interesting to see how McKay’s presence will affect it. The cast, which includes Paul Rudd, Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Patrick Wilson, Michael Pena, and Corey Stoll, is expected to stay in place, and the film is still on course for a July 2015 release.

X-Men: Here at GS, we’re still coming to terms with Channing Tatum being potentially cast as Gambit in a solo project, but that hasn’t stopped him shooting his mouth off about the nature of negotiations, and his hopes for the X-Men character getting his standalone movie before X-Men: Apocalypse. “Creatively, we’re starting to chug forward,” confirmed Tatum. “Obviously there’s nothing [official]. There are only conversations and dreams right now, really. “We’ve talked about it being a standalone, first, and actually trying to change the ‘hero, superhero movie.’ Because Gambit is not your typical hero. He’s a thief. He walks on the gray. I’m hoping we can change it a little bit, and then ultimately feather into the other ones.” Tatum continued, “It will probably just be a standalone film before Apocalypse. That’s if it does well. If it doesn’t do well, I probably won’t make it into Apocalypse [laughs].” Personally I’d rate Channing Stockard over Channing Tatum for the role… 🙂 Or at least Josh Holloway!!!

And speaking of X-Men spin-offs, according to X-Force comic creator Rob Liefeld, the potential X-Force movie has been postponed indefinitely by 20th Century Fox’s in favour of X-Men: Apocalypse in the wake of X-Men: Days Of Future Past‘s universe time-line reboot. “Everything changed when X-Men: Apocalypse was announced,” said Liefeld.

When asked if the movie will still happen, the artist replied: “Coin toss I’d wager…” but cautioned against too much negativity, adding “Be patient!”

Doctor Strange: Attention Rumour-Mongers!!! According to the interweb, Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch and The Dark Knight Rises Tom Hardy are both at the top of the running (in Marvel’s mind) for their Doctor Strange movie. Director Scott Derrickson is confirmed to be helming the Phase 3 film posting this excellent picture with the caption, “My next movie will be STRANGE!”,

while the script is being put together by writing duo Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer. The character has been hinted at in both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Agents of SHIELD, and Kevin Feige has long insisted that plans to bring Stephen Strange to the big screen are in place, even if there is no long-term release date. If Hardy gets it, he’ll be the umpteenth actor to play multiple characters in both the DC & Marvel univ… Oh, never mind!!!
