Marvel Mutterings: Spiderman, Luke Cage, and Wolverine

Whether it’s Fox, Sony or the Marvel stable themselves, here are the world-wide witterings!

Sony go Marvel Phases over Spider-Man, Idris Elba for Luke Cage, and Wolverine has a yellow streak!

Amazing Spider-Man: Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal revealed to company investors their plans to create a Marvel Phase 1-style universe out of the characters their The Amazing Spider-Man license has given them access to. “We are going to access Marvel’s full world of Spider-Man characters, so be on the lookout for new heroes and villains,” said Pascal. You would think that given all the important characters that first debuted in Amazing Spider-Man comics, it would be rich pickings – but it’s obviously more complex than that, given that the rights to the Punisher and the Kingpin of Crime are owned by Marvel. So – who could be on Pascal’s radar? Villain-turned-hero Venom, reluctant hero Scarlet Spider, sexy thief Black Cat, Spider-Girl and Arachne must all be in the frame, although I can’t help wonder if there really is a market for such a spider-variant heavy portfolio…

Oh, and we also got a first look at a pre-Electro Jamie Foxx – “No Jamie! Don’t touch that!”

Luke Cage: Not entirely surprising, but still a little unexpected,  Thor: The Dark World star Idris Elba revealed that he was once in the frame to play Luke Cage, Power Man. “There was talk about Luke Cage at one time – I thought Luke Cage was a pretty interesting character,” Elba confirmed. “They were going to do it, but I don’t know what happened…” – does this mean that he could be back in the frame for Netflix’s recently announced project? Netflix does have a track record of drafting in high-profile stars & creators for their original series… but if not, I guess it would eliminate that whole embarrassing “Captain America and Human Torch can never meet” scenario…

Wolverine: In case you hadn’t seen it on the web yet, a new deleted scene included in the Blu-ray and DVD release of the film, shows an alternative ending in which Yukio gives Logan (Jackman) his signature yellow suit. All I can say is, I was afraid when I heard about it, but very pleased when I saw the final article:
