TV REVIEW: The Vampire Diaries Episode 5.16 – “While You Were Sleeping”

This week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries is all about Elena. And guess what – there’s another doppelgänger!

Elena wakes to find herself confined in her dorm at school. When she questions Stefan, he informs her that she’s very sick – remember, Katherine injected her with the vampire-eating virus (aka the “Ripper” virus) before she vacated her body. Of course, this means everyone must drop everything and run around to find her a cure.

Caroline heads to Wes’s lab, where she’s joined by an unlikely helper in Enzo. They discover that Wes has accelerated the effects of the serum by adding werewolf venom. Thankfully, Wes also made an antidote for the original Ripper virus – the only problem is that the Travellers have it. To get it from them, they need Stefan to meet them at a super secret location. He does, and they find out that they need him to help locate his last remaining doppelgänger.

The Travellers perform a spell and get the location, and they want to kill him through Stefan’s mind, but Caroline fights them off. She volunteers to go to Atlanta with Enzo to kill him. Road trip!

While her friends are risking themselves to save her, Elena can’t seem to stop herself from talking to Damon, who is trying to figure out a way to tell her that he killed Aaron Whitmore. She manages to free herself, and then she and Damon connect, argue, and then connect some more. Way to quit him, Elena.

Oh, and the witch that Bonnie is tutoring? Turns out that she’s shady business – she’s hiding the true level of her skill from Bonnie for some Nefarious Purpose.

Definitely not the strongest episode of the season – felt a little flat plot-wise, but that could be because I am getting bored with the whole Elena-in-distress thing. Seriously, doesn’t anyone have anything better to do than run around saving her?

I jest – mostly. Honestly, I feel like Elena is a complete and utter failure as a vampire. Look at Caroline, who really came into her own as a character after she became a character. She got stronger, developed a real personality – Elena just got more annoying. I find myself completely uninterested in her story. She is a front runner for worst vampire ever.

Also, still not getting the point of the Travelers. They pop up at very random intervals to collect vampire blood, and it’s hard to tell whose side they’re on (if they’re on a side at all). Hopefully, there is a big reveal coming as to what their purpose actually is. Until then, enough with the chanting already!

The witch baddie was an interesting twist – we’re led to believe that Liv is a novice witch just coming into her power (with Bonnie’s help). But then we find out that she’s actually quite good at it, and that she and her brother are Up to Something. More to come there, but I feel like these two are the right ones to watch at the moment.

A lot happened in the episode, but nothing was resolved, which is why it all felt a bit stale. Hopefully the action will pick up as the show enters its final stretch of episodes.
