Dollhouse Season 2 Episode 8 – A Love Supreme

So Echo has been returned, safe and sound to the Dollhouse. Well, safe, but maybe not sound. Echo is going through some rigorous tests, almost torture, to discover whether there has been any lasting harm done to her as a result of not having any ‘treatments’ for three months. Meanwhile, her regular romantic engagement clients are turning up dead.

When Echo’s prior clients start being murdered, Adele DeWitt immediately assumes that since Echo has been out in the real world for three months, she must have had something to do with it. As it turns out the murderer is Alpha, and he is not shy about making his intentions clear.

The Dollhouse make it their priority to protect Echo’s last living client, but Alpha breaks into the Dollhouse to get to him. In the process Alpha gets hold of Paul Ballard, realises that he and Echo are more than just Doll and handler and decides to take his revenge on Ballard also.

This episode of Dollhouse is slightly disappointing. It feels as though the speedy resolution that we were heading to has slowed somewhat. In any other context, the episode would be thrilling; love and murder, betrayal and death, but it appears to do little for the over arching storyline. On closer inspection, however, it becomes clear that this episode is building towards a greater whole. The episode reveals how Ballard and Echo feel about each other, reinforces the fact that Echo is now in charge of her imprints and strengthens the idea that Echo now has a personality of her own, and is not just an empty vessel waiting for Caroline to be poured back inside.

The only thing that remains to be seen is how this affects the storyline of Dollhouse as a whole.
