Futurama Season 6 Episode 2 In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela

In-A-Gadda-Da-Leela is the second episode of the new, reborn season 6 of everyone’s favourite retro futuristic cartoon, Futurama. In this episode, Leela and Zapp Brannigan take on a death sphere intent on destroying the Earth for it’s smutty content, but along the way end up stranded on a Garden of Eden like planet.

The story of this episode is reminiscent of A Bicyclops Built for Two in season 2 where Alcazar pretends that he and Leela are the two sole Cyclopses left in the universe in an attempt to lure her into bed. Zapp follows a similar line, and tells Leela that the Earth has been destroyed and they are the two sole humans left, as a seduction technique. This as a basis for the episode, worked well in season 2, and even though it feels slightly familiar the second time around, it works again.

The Death Sphere is an obvious parody of the Death Star both in name and appearance, and –as has become the norm in Futurama episodes – there are other references to popular culture, including the B-Movie style dreams of Zapp – cleverly entitled The Transcredible Exploits of Zapp Brannigan.

The problem with the episode is that the climax is given a lot of build up, but not a lot of time for the pay off, so it feels slightly rushed by the time the episode ends. That said, fans of the show will not be disappointed, but this is definitely the weaker of the two episodes that we have seen of the new season so far.
