Voices of the Syndicate… Holiday Style

This month, I asked the agents of Geek Syndicate the following question:

What’s your favorite geeky holiday movie/book/TV episode? Is it a particular Doctor Who special? That time Mulder and Scully actually exchanged gifts after one seriously bizarre night? Or maybe when Moya’s crew visited Earth on Farscape? Let me know for another edition of Voices of the Syndicate!

Here are their responses, in the order they were received. And despite the lot of us clearly not being able to pick a single favorite, this was a good time. Enjoy another edition of Voices of the Syndicate!

Fia: ANY none earth/humanity/this universe based film/book/tv/etc that tries to have a Christmas theme going, but Christmas doesn’t exist in that universe, so they have to come up with an alternative – think Life Day in the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special or Snoggletog for the Christmas special of How to Train Your Dragon, exactly like Christmas but without saying Christmas. I think non-Christmas Christmases in alternate world fandoms are hilarious!

Ant: Community episodes are great and I love The Librarians’ episode with Bruce Campbell as Santa. The Doctor Who “Christmas Carol” with Katherine Jenkins. Hogfather by Terry Pratchett is magnificent (though the TV version was a bit poor). And of course The Empire Strikes Back and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service are great Christmas movies. And who doesn’t want to spend Christmas Eve beating up thugs while avoiding Assassins and dressing like a Bat? (Batman Arkham Origins). But my ultimate favourite is this: Justice League: Comfort and Joy. It’s such a lovely twenty minutes showing three different Christmases: Hawkgirl and Green Lantern take some time off, having snow fun, then a good old brawl in a space bar. The Flash tries to find this year’s “sold out must have” toy for kids in an orphanage while defeating Ultra Humanite. And The Martian Manhunter visits Ma and Pa Kent with Superman to experience a small town Christmas. It’s delightful. The episode has action, but it also has a relaxed feel and lets us see superheroes in quieter moments.

Ron: What’s wrong with you people?!? A very merry Wookiee Christmas to one and all!

Vichus: I’m going with the “Christmas special” of season 2 of Misfits. Nathan is dressed as Santa – and gives the gift of himself to a pregnant woman. Jesus – or someone who thinks he’s Jesus because he can walk on water – shows up. The rest of the community service crew get presents in the form of any new power they want to have. Merry Christmas to all!

Ian: Gremlins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stacy: I think my favourite geeky Christmas episode has to be Rick And Morty’s “Anatomy Park”; an absolutely excellent look at a ‘traditional’ family Christmas in this modern age, alongside a Jurassic Park-style theme-park-inside-a-hobo-Santa-gone-wrong sci-fi romp. Perfect. I have to say, though, that my favourite Christmas special is not geeky; it’s the Bottom Christmas special “Holy”. Everything from the individually wrapped sprouts to the finger, the Christmas portrait to the three wise men’s gifts; it never fails to get me laughing and always puts me in proper festive mode. It is tinged with a little sadness now that Rik Mayall has passed, however it does always remind me of the time I got to meet him, and he was BRILLIANT.

Ron (Later): Ditto on Bottom! And Doctor Who – Runaway Bride!

Barry: I have to say for me it’s Doctor Who. In this world of streaming and recording shows it is one of the shows I’m gutted when I don’t get to watch it live on Christmas day. Also Die Hard because nothing says Christmas like someone in a dirty white T-shirt shouting out of a broken window with a machine gun (or that may be just on my street). Oh, oh, also Hooves of Fire…that seal joke…quality.

Vix: Die Hard, Gremlins, Miracle on 34th Street (the remake with Attenborough), Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3, Home Alone.  By far the greatest, and most emotional Doctor Who Xmas special has to be “A Christmas Carol.”  I bawl like a baby every time I watch it. And the music is enough to set me off too.  I don’t think they will ever top that one. Also love a classic horror film on Christmas Eve.  Something like The Woman In Black or Crimson Peak. Something with a Victorian vibe to it.  Or I just curl up with some Lovecraft and a cup of hot chocolate!

James: Muppets Christmas Carol – 25 years old now but just feels like perfection.  Try to watch it every year.

And finally, me. Goodness what’s a wabbit to say? I had picked just one answer originally, and that was The X-Files “How the Ghosts Stole Christmas,” but after reading everyone else’s answers, I’ll throw a few more into the ring – just for fun. I also like the remake of Miracle on 34th Street. And Die Hard is a must. Neither are exactly geeky, but since this question took on a life of its own, I’ll include them.  Iron Man 3 is fun. And then there’s Home Alone. It’s silly, but I love it. And probably best of all, for Christmas Day or Evening viewing, for me: Hook.

And there you have it, folks! What are your favorite holiday movies/books/whatever, geeky or not? We could all use a bit more cheer in our lives, so add them to the comments.
